Tools and Artifacts

This page features "tools and artifacts" of the editorial craft, broadly defined.

1. Susan Ferber's Lapdogs

Olive with two manuscripts.
It seems that Susan Ferber of Oxford University Press has her two lapdogs, Olive and Gemma, do all of her editing for her. "It may be my secret weapon," she confided, after the interview I did with her on June 3, 2014. "In general, they're very wise: they can look at manuscripts, give sideways glances, and judge proposals. [T]he longer the manuscript for them, the better." Olive and Gemma were not available for comment. Nor are they the first to be exploited in this way. "There are at least three generations of Yorkshire terriers that have been very important in my editorial life and I can't imagine doing my job without them," Ferber said.
